THE ARMORY SHOW
NEW YORK CITY'S LARGEST ANNUAL ART FAIR
FIRST PART OF OUR COVERAGE for 2013

Every March, artists, galleries, collectors, critics and curators from all over the world make New York their destination for The Armory Show and Armory Arts Week, NYC. Events include special receptions, open studios, art tours, museum discounts, performances, panels, artist discussions and parties, but the main event is at Piers 92 and 94 along the West Side Highway. All of the other art fairs during the same time period are riding on the coat tails of this major exhibition. Usually about $40,000,000 of art is sold during these five days, at the Armory Show, alone. There were 214 galleries at the fair this year and 80,000+ visitors strolled through the show. Armory Arts Week has become one of the most important weeks on New York City's cultural calendar.

Gagosian Gallery, the international mega-art-dealer participated in the Armory Show for the first time this year, with a booth devoted to Andy Warhol's paintings and prints - shown as a large installation (complete with it's own guard).

The Armory Show 2013 celebrated the centennial of its namesake, the original Armory Show of 1913, widely credited with introducing the European avant-garde to the United States. This year "Armory Focus: USA" (a specially curated section of the fair) shifted its gaze inwards to the USA  paying homage to the shocking and revolutionary impact of the 1913 exhibition.
